Hurricane Harvey: How can I help?August 31st, 2017
By now, the world knows about the devastation that is Hurricane Harvey. This category 4 hurricane dropped nearly 30 inches of rain along with winds of up to 132 mph in some places, making it the worst hurricane to hit the United States in nearly 100 years. Texas Governor Greg Abbot stated that he believes this may indeed be “categorized as one of the largest disasters America has ever faced.”
And more rain is coming. Some reports say the area could receive another 15-25 inches making escape or rescue nearly impossible for some. Its in times like this that you see the humanity in people as the country comes together to support the devastated area.
Like the rain, the support isn’t coming in on a small scale. Comedian Kevin Hart has issued a challenge to celebrities to donate to Hurricane Harvey relief funds, and moguls, such as Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj, and The Rock, are pitching in millions and urging others with means to do the same. According to early news reports, up to 30,000 are seeking temporary shelter, and up to 450,000 may need more permanent assistance.
However, just because you aren’t swimming in your “dollar dollar bills” doesn’t mean there isn’t anything you can do. The Red Cross, along with others are taking donations as small as $10.
